Goods and Services Tax (GST) applies to most goods and services sold in India. Whether you run a shop, freelance, or manage invoices, a reliable GST calculator for India saves time and prevents billing errors. This guide explains the slabs, inclusive vs exclusive pricing, and how to use Pitara's free tool.

GST slabs in India

The most common GST rates are:

  • 5% — essentials and some food items
  • 12% — processed foods, computers, mobile phones
  • 18% — most services and general goods (most common)
  • 28% — luxury items, automobiles, aerated drinks

GST exclusive vs GST inclusive

GST exclusive means tax is added on top of the base price. If a product costs ₹1,000 before tax at 18%, GST is ₹180 and the customer pays ₹1,180.

GST inclusive means the listed price already includes tax. To find the base amount, you reverse-calculate: ₹1,180 inclusive at 18% = ₹1,000 base + ₹180 GST.

How to use the GST Calculator

  1. Open the GST Calculator on Pitara Tools.
  2. Enter the amount (base or gross depending on mode).
  3. Select a GST slab: 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%.
  4. Choose Add GST (exclusive) or Remove GST (inclusive).
  5. Read the breakdown: net amount, GST value, gross total, and optional CGST/SGST split.

CGST and SGST explained

For intra-state sales, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). Our calculator shows this split automatically — useful for invoices that list both components. For inter-state sales, IGST applies instead (not split in this tool).

Practical examples

Adding 18% GST to ₹5,000: GST = ₹900, total = ₹5,900. CGST and SGST each = ₹450.

Removing 18% GST from ₹11,800 inclusive: Base = ₹10,000, GST = ₹1,800.
